Just stating the obvious that not buying one of these things that we never seemed to need until they told us we needed it is the only way to have "the environment in mind".

I never thought I needed one until my wife lost her car keys, and the Fiat dealer charged $1,200 for a replacement.

And it's not even the electronics that makes them so expensive. Modern car keys aren't like the 1970's where it's just a piece of metal with the edges shaved off. Those little key cutting kiosks at Home Depot can't cope with today's complex engraving.

I have cats. I can’t count on things being where I left them.

BOYCOTT.

Why would a US college student care about a revolution where the US is not involved in providing the weapons that are doing the killing?

You think that what is happening in Iran, and the genocide by the united states and Israel of the Palestinians is the same?

People are not being told to be outraged about it via whatever social media platform.

This article right here, and the countless that came before are telling people to be outraged. People aren't, partly because they don't know what to believe without really any reliable or unbiased reporting, partly because the Trump outrage machine has filled the news feeds with so much other stuff to be outraged about, and partly because the situation in the Middle East seems so futile and stupid that people don't want to care because nothing will change and no government with any say in the region will allow peace or democracy or self-determination to the people there.

With your mouth?

> As builders, we are being out-engineered.

The funny part of engineers is that they always think that, at some point, they will reach perfect engineering.

The best engineering already exists and you do not need to do a thing. Code will not save you from the shtstorm that is coming.

> The funny part of engineers is that they always think that, at some point, they will reach perfect engineering.

This is the opposite of what I’ve observed. Most engineers know that everything is tradeoffs and compromises. They know there will always be a better way.

A lot of engineering management is getting engineering teams to accept good enough rather than endless iterations and refactoring.

So just curious when all your tech people are going to stage a worker strike against this fascist bullshit? What do you just wanna get a gold bar like Tim Cook did?

I wish HN would align itself with the Dao instead of just liking the Dao.

Up voting and down voting comments is an affront to the Dao.

Oh please stop.

Love, Someone who studied Daoism for 16 years.

I'm sure. But can you explain more? Share that 16 years of knowledge, even a little bit?

Yes, I know this sounds conspiratorial, but I think the whole Liquid Ass thing was a rush to put some other software in Apple products to appease the Trump admin.

For example, it is new in Tahoe that they store your filevault encryption key in your icloud keychain without telling you.

Which is a very good thing.

iCloud is much more secure than most people realize because most people don’t take the 30 minutes to learn how it is architected.

You can (and should) watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLGFriOKz6U&t=1993s for all the details about how iCloud is protected, but especially the time-linked section. :)

I dont need to know anything about icloud to know this repy doesnt answer the "they didnt tell anyone" part which naturally makes me suspicious.

But iCloud Keychain is end-to-end encrypted using device-specific keys, so Apple cannot read items in your iCloud Keychain (modulo adding their own key as a device key, rolling out a backdoor, etc. but that applies to all proprietary software).

How is the data recovered if device is lost?

If you lose access to all devices in the circle of trust, the data is lost. If you're curious: https://support.apple.com/guide/security/secure-keychain-syn...

That doesn't sound very promising for someone who may have only one phone from Apple or just laptop.

My conspiration theory about Liquid Ass is their hardware for past 5 years was so good that they needed to make people finally upgrade it. My Air M1 16GB worked absolutely fine until it slowed down immensely on macOS 26.
